The Philadelphia Eagles (6-3) did a nice impersonation of the best team in football while dismantling the Redskins 59-28 Monday night while the New York Giants (6-3) were shocked at home by the surprisingly inspired Cowboys.

The NFL betting line for this contest is Philadelphia –3 paying -130 at home with the total set at 48.

Before crowning the Philadelphia Eagles as NFC Champions, keep in mind that the Redskins are a team in turmoil with a defense that has not stopped anyone all year. Once the game got out of hand in the first quarter, Washington just stopped playing. A lot of teams could have piled up gaudy statistics vs. the Redskins’ defense under those circumstances.

So what exactly are we saying? Well, there is no doubt that the Eagles have a very good team, there is no denying that. However, we simply so not think they are as good as they looked Monday night vs. a dead team.

The New York Giants are on the opposite end of that spectrum in that we do not think they are as bad as they looked vs. the Cowboys either, the same Cowboy team they dismantled easily after Tony Romo went down in Dallas. The Cowboys took a lot of people by surprise by playing with so much emotion, and apparently, “a lot of people” included the Giants, who simply took them too lightly.

So in evaluation of this week’s this matchup, be careful not to put too much emphasis on what happened last week with both teams and take a look at the whole body of work for each team this season.

These teams have nearly identical numbers offensively, with the Eagles averaging 28.6 points and 400.2 yards per game overall and the Giants averaging 26.2 points and 409.8 yards. In fact, the Giants rank second in the NFL in total offense and the Eagles rank third. Both teams are surprisingly balanced also, although the surprises are for opposite reasons.

The Giants have always been a running team, yet they currently rank sixth in the NFL in passing offense at 262.9 yards per game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid has often been criticized for running the ball less than just about any other coach in the league, yet the Eagles are now third in the league in rushing offense with 151.1 yards per game.

A lot of Philadelphia’s rushing success has to do with having another runner at quarterback in Michael Vick, and in reality, they are not really running the ball more than they used to, but rather doing more when they do run it, leading the NFL by a wide margin with 5.4 yards per carry.
